There's a 50% damage multiplier if you use attacks that are the same type as your Pokemon. Just fyi.

If your Pokemon's main attack type doesn't match its own type, then it's likely useless (unless if you're snorlax with lick, that's still 20 dps which is high tier).

Wasted 50k dust on a Gyarados upgrading it. It's 94% perfect IV's with a perfect moveset (dragon & dragon), but actually perfect moveset with multiplier is dragon & water. Because Gyarados doesn't have a water main attack, it's a worthless Pokemon.

Gyarados is really only good vs Dragonites because Garados isn't dragon but can have dragon abilities, which double vs dragon type pokemon

He's a situational character and also people will want purely for cool factor and to add to their pokedex. Not useless at all, he's actually quite viable.
