So this is a giant leap forward from Pokemon Gold/Silver...

I just bought a 3DS the other day in preparation for Sun/Moon..

How does this all work? Online trading/battling? Is there actually a market for 3DS Mons/Items?

Congrats on your new 3DS, a fine purchase if I must say! Online trading/battling is amazing, and you will surely love it. There is a small market for 3DS pokemon as well as items, Master Balls, hard to get items, etc. People usually buy either competitive pokemon for battling or level 1 5/6 IV shiny kalos born pokemon to raise on their own. If you are interested in buying some level 1 shinies to enjoy in your new game, check out my list at https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1tWPtrercZfbj2X0xX3l6NGwPWJD-6HEU5Q8u9jLE8X0 and let me know if anything catches your eye!

5/6 IV refers to the pokemon's stat potential. IV stands for "Initial Value". It's a hidden value that ranges from 0-31. 6 IV means the pokemon has an IV spread of 31-31-31-31-31-31 I.E. maximum potential stats for that pokemon.
Shiny of course refers to the ultra-rare version of the pokemon that has different colors. I.E. shiny Charizard is black rather than orange, shiny Magmar is pink rather than red, so on and so forth.

So basically, a shiny 5/6 IV pokemon is a shiny pokemon with perfect or ideal stats! Let me know if you have any other questions :D.

Yeah, if you use a foreign ditto you have a higher likelihood of getting a shiny pokemon ^^;
