Depends on the game we are talking about.
In PokeMMO for instance you got a chat system and speech bubbles to communicate with others.
On the 3DS system you got the chance to exchange tiny messages of 16 letters, which is quite bad, but there is the function to talk with them instead.

found pokemmo the best, poke planet has some better ideas but over and above all... mmo..
