I look at this site and see which sets I like and start from there. Scarlet & Violet and Sword & Shield are current and you can find products to buy at a reasonable price. Anything that is Sun & Moon and before that can be very expensive.

pricing is inflated. I wouldn't waste your time or your money. Newer sets are always trash for opening as well. The way the new cards work its hard to do well with opening sealed product. You basically get 1-2 Alternate art cards per BOX ($120 USD each box or so) and they usually aren't worth half the price of a whole box.

From someone who has been involved with TCGs for 20 years, I suggest staying away from it all unless you can buy collections in bulk or something like that

I personally just buy a box of each set and that is about it but I do that knowing 100% I AM NOT getting my money back and its purely for the thrill

The packs that come in a "mini-tin" or the poke balls have a high hit chance but the packs are shoved in the container and can be damaged. They can have whiting on the corners or have bent corners. If you plan to grade your cards, this will drop your score and value.

The hobby is pretty expensive depending on which set you like. I'm trying to complete the Scarlet & Violet: 151 master set, and I have already spent close to $1,500. The good thing is I got in early with my pre-orders and acquired all the promo cards: Pokemon Center exclusive Snorlax & Squirter, Best Buy Bulbsaur, and Gamestop Charmander. I finally got a Charizard ex card https://www.pokedata.io/card/Pokemon+Card+151/Charizard+ex+199 and it looks so much better than the base set Charizard I never got as a kid.
