I think the 3 step "glitch" caused the large drop off. Supposedly there was a large drop the day after the glitch started. Which makes sense since without tracking, hunting specific Pokemon is annoying so what's the point? Most people aren't going to bother using outside sources to find Pokemon hence the large drop. I still played, but mainly to hatch eggs and battle at gyms. Not nearly as fun as when I could actually track the Pokemon I wanted to without aimlessly walking around for it. There would have always been a drop since people get tired of things but I doubt it would have been so sudden if niantic didn't mess with and eventually remove the main feature of the game.
lol yeah i seen a machamp and hitmonchan on my nearby list and couldn't find them at all. i don't know who thought completely removing the hot and cold aspect of the list was a good idea but i hope that person lost their job.
