To be honest I don’t know what to tell you. If you want to keep up on meta and you’re focused on winning battles & events - I guess I’d start opening from new set - A2. On the other hand, in my opinion, there’re better Pokemon in A1 & A1a sets.. (maybe because I’m old heh).

For now you need to collect cards to get through solo battles anyway, so it’s up to you where you start - from classic collection or new meta. You can do solo with both. Also if you’re F2P user I’d suggest you just to collect what you like

Edit/ also if you want to try free premium month, I’d suggest to start it on half of february so you have time to complete both february & march premium missions

Since you're new, I would probably take my time and just slowly open packs. Try not to FOMO, you will catch up, given time.

If you're a collector, just open packs with the cards you want. Wonderpick is a great way to get some of the rarer cards, since it's generally higher chance to pull the rarer cards (1/5 or 20%).

If you're interested in battling, then your pulling strategy will want the meta cards for strong decks. Since the new set has come out, we don't know just yet what's strong and what's not....Need time to cook the meta. I like to visit pokemonmeta since they update with tournament rankings often. For now, check out the battle section since the tutorials give you some resources and the single player battles give resources as well.

I've been f2p from the start and I have majority of the cards each expansion (not including all full art cards, etc) and I have been able to complete all the content I want. If you're a light spender, I think the premium pass is likely one of the higher value spends for your $$.

Try to find 5 friends to exchange daily likes on card showcases, we receive shop tickets daily across various activities (showcase likes, thanks from battles/wonderpick, etc). We can receive up to 5 shop tickets daily and we can use this to spend in the shop for extra pull currency or some of the basic starter cards. Once you have friends you simply go to social hub everyday and under community showcase, you just spam likes all the friends. Hopefully they return the favor so you can get shop tickets.

You're gonna be so behind without spending $$$ at this point, idek what recommendations I could make because you've missed probably 150+ free packs so far from events and stuff.. unless you're a whale you're probably better off just not playing at all tbh lolol
