maybe you were paralyzed psn or something like that
thats why you should sace before every battle with important guy or gym leader incase you lose turn off and turn back on
on pc a while back i was fighting the last leader i got to hi last pokemon he was killing me every time and i kept picking last saved game with his last pokemon and somehow i won because on emulators you can save wherever you want

Or. Fight them all again for more exp. Thunder and ice beam and he's cake.
