*Sigh*

This is semantics at this point. It does 120 damage, and takes up 5 seconds, so a DPS value is calculated from that.

These calculations are not based on when damage is dealt within the time period calculated, but how much total damage is dealt within the time period calculated. To make those calculations, certain moves need to be broken down into DPS values.

Well you have to take the abbreviation by it's definition lol...

"Damage over Time, generally abbreviated as DoT and or simply dot, refers to inflicting some damage on one's foe which will be applied at a regular interval for a limited duration."

"Damage per second (DPS or dps) is a measure of the damage dealt by an entity or group over one second. DPS is a more practical measure of damage output than plain damage, as it allows you to effectively compare damage output."

You are correct when it comes to DPS. That is what you are talking about not DoTs.

I'm not using WoW definitions... I'm using mathematics. Holy fuck bud.

Damage / time

As in, a calculation. Jesus christ.

ya candabro, this is not terminology thats new. dont reinvent the wheel. dps = damage per second. dot = damage over time. They do mean different things.

Overall, i think your overthinking this.

Take total damage, divide by animation/cooldown. Thats your dps.

take attack that ticks damage x times during animation. thats dot.

Also when doing damage calculations, just take the dps value out. Your calculation should have total damage for the attack with the animation time factored in (which will give you your dps without doing extra math), since you want total damage in X seconds anyway.

TL;DR

Snorlax with body slam is much worse than Snorlax with hyperbeam, at least for attack. Body slam has 2 higher dps, but hyperbeam gives 30 dps over 5 seconds, which is significantly better.

also a lot easier to doj hyperbeam since it takes so long to charge
