breeding is 1/8192 chance of shiny, just like anything else.

Your best chance of getting a shiny is to use the pokemon radar and do the thing with the rustling grass. Since I don't think magikarp appears out of water, you're stuck with that 1/8192 chance.

If you're still interested in breeding gyarados with non-ditto pokemon, he's a member of the dragon egg group and the water 2 egg group, which means he can breed with the following.

Dragon - Altaria, Arbok, Axew, Bagon, Charizard, Charmander, Charmeleon, Deino, Dragonair, Dragonite, Dratini, Druddigon, Ekans, Feebas, Fraxure, Gabite, Garchomp, Gible, Grovyle, Gyarados, Haxorus, Horsea, Hydreigon, Kingdra, Magikarp, Milotic, Salamence, Sceptile, Scrafty, Scraggy, Seadra, Seviper, Shelgon, Swablu, Treecko, Zweilous

Water 2 - Alomomola, Barboach, Basculin (Blue-Striped), Basculin (Red-Striped), Carvanha, Chinchou, Finneon, Goldeen, Gyarados, Lanturn, Lumineon, Luvdisc, Magikarp, Octillery, Qwilfish, Relicanth, Remoraid, Seaking, Sharpedo, Wailmer, Wailord, Whiscash

Yeah, If they have the little whirlpool thing (vs. rustling grass), it could still be possible if you fish it or walk into it.

even after 8000 encounter, your chance to find a shiny is still the same
and i doubt you had 8k encounter anyway (prolly more like 200 or so, probably even less if you're using repels)

naw i sometimes level pokemon from tons of random wild pokemon fights and ive played gold-black (red + yellow + blue too but can't find shinies), not religously tho.... but i've caught all of the pokemon in gold + ruby and restarted games so much, i find it very unlikely that ive only had 200 wild pokemon encounters considering in gold there is 252 pokemon (mew + celebi counted too, but i didnt own celebi in gold :( )

it is true that after 8000 encounters my chance is still 1/8xxx but im still sad that i havn't even encounterd a single one
