What are some decent Pokemon to grab at the beginning?

I grabbed Snivy as a starter and I just want to know which Pokemon are decent when fully evolved. I don't like leveling a Pokemon just to throw it away later, so I'll probably grab a gyarados and at least one other Pokemon until I get much further. Gyarados is always good, and always my water Pokemon, unless I have blastoise.

Though I have not played, I imagine it is just like the rest of the Pokemon games, so just grab a Pokemon of each type so you will have something to use against whatever kind of opponent, whether it be a fire opponent in which case you would grab your water pokemon or uh i think Plant types against ghost or whatever.

I have always just caught one of each type in the beginning as I came across them and sometimes I would just catch every Pokemon that i did not already have just to have a million choices.

Edit: I think you are pretty safe in betting that the majority of Pokemon when fully evolved will be pretty kick-ass, aside from the few Pokemon that are completely useless, this should not be a problem.

Yeah, except a butterfree is pretty shit by the end of the game. So is whatever a bidoof evolves into. I want Pokemon that I'll be able to get through the Elite 4 with, or whatever this game has.

you can only get gen5 pokemon in your main playthrough

you'll only be able to catch the other gen pokemon once you beat the elite four

That kinda sucks. I have absolutely no idea what any of them are.

I also can't really evolve pokemon through trading, I'm using an emulator. I could use Pokesav, but it's a long and gay process to do it right.

dont worry my first time playing through was bomb as hell just go on bulbapedia or whatever else you want and search the names of the pokemanz and then u you find types and such and use em
