I'm looking to learn how to do this really subtle 3Dish looking gradientish effect on the menus (the black arrows point to it) but I do not know what to look for? Is that a simple gradient? Or is it more stuff put together? I have no formal design experience. I also use photoshop cs5.

well, from my understanding you fill it with the solid colour you want then make a new layer and use a white - transparent gradient over the top and lower the opacity.
