i really like the outcome, but is it not a bit risky using the same layer instead of applying the image onto a new layer?

No...oh god no...

1. You show extremely amateur smudging technique.
2. You never apply the image (ctrl + alt + shift + e), instead you merge the layers and then duplicate it which makes it a lot harder to fix your mistakes.
3. You use the eraser instead of a layer mask.
4. The outcome looks like balls, largely due to your improper editing conventions, and you only spent 6 minutes on making a tag.
5. Don't make tutorials if you don't produce anything of quality. You're just teaching other people to make the same mistakes as you.
