If I have a render on a layer how can I apply a gradient map to it that will only affect that render and not the background on the previous layer aswell.

double click on layer.
layer options bar should show up.
click on "gradient overlay"
then adjust gradient to what you want.

Thank you! Can I also ask how do I do this with adjustment layers?

Go to the adjustment layers tab, click gradient maps, choose your gradient and work out your blending options with different opacity etc. ;)
Once you have done that, press ctrl + alt + G (make sure the layer with the render is below the layer with the gradient map)
