On the forums I regularly use, to hotlink, you would type

However, when I insert the link on this site, it shows only the actual link, rather than the text I want it to show
I understand that all forums operate differently, which leads me to believe that I'm doing something wrong
Can anyone help?

I don't think so, you wont unintentionally click an outside link and end up with a hacked account or something.
