everytime i try to do dots with a 1 pixel brush it shows up as two or more
can anyone help?

Instead of using the brush tool, use the pencil tool for that.

You should find it if you right click the brush icon in the tools panel.

You can also try making sure hardness is set to 100% and zoom in. You might be moving your mouse slightly, thus making it into a "line".
