I honestly do not understand what I'm doing with layers..

If you have any tips or advice that would be great, and also tell me if Sumopaint is good for a beginner?

get gimp if you cant get photoshop, and then follow some tuts

Vouch, Gimp is a not bad program considering it is free

I LOVE sumo paint as a browser paint.

I messed around with it and a zelda render, made my current sig.

I didnt understand layers at first either, but they do come in handy.

It allows you to paint over stuff then rub it off without destroying whats underneath really.

I messed about with layers too, you should experiment.

just get photoshop, more powerful and after you look through a couple tuts its pretty easy to use. and yes it is expensive, IF you buy it. because we can not say things like "Just go torrent Photoshop CS2 with crack" or try to advertise such pirating things as "Rapidshare and Megapload also have complete files for free if you are willing to have a slower download speed." .. *cough*go dl it*cough*
