I can't erase over my gradient maps; yes I've tried different files and such. Nothing seems to be helping

have tried to create a layer mask and paint black in it?

Thats normal,... get a brush (soft brush, use the opacity u want) choose black and it will work as an "eraser"

I had this problem for the last few days, though i had to use white to get it to erase of the maps ;/
