how do i get the borders when a black line ONLY is on the top of the signature and the bottom.

rectangular marquee (and i usually use a fixed size so top and bottom are the same) and fill it with black or w/e

take out the rectangular marquee tool and find a suitable size for your border. once selected, take out the paint bucket tool (can be hidden under the gradient tool, just right click and select the paint bucket), then fill ur selected piece with any colour of your choice, duplicate that layer and move it to the opposite side
