So im still new to the whole photoshop thing
And i saved a signature i was working on, but now i cant go back and edit it at all.
Every thing says locked.

Go to Image -> Mode -> RGB to remove the index. :)

You have to save the .PSD file to edit all the layers. They become merged once you save it as a JPG/JPEG/PNG/GIF/etc. and can only be worked on top of. Save the PSD next time, and you can re-open it in photoshop and edit all the layers. ;)

this, you cannot edit the background
