What i do sometimes is use the background eraser tool.
idk if thats what you're supposed to do, but it works sometimes for me.

Well, if your just trying to get something out of an image with a plain white background, you can use the magic eraser tool. For more advanced rendering, you may want to zoom in and use the pen tool, once you've made it around the whole image (what you want cut out), you can either copy/paste it to a new layout, or you can just reverse the selection and hit the Del button.

i dont advise cutting out or deleting the background selection but rather masking as it will make cleaning up/altering your selection any further alot easier. id suggest saving original renders as psd with masking layer.

I use 2 methods, depends how difficult it will be.

1) using the wand tool (W) click in the areas you wan't to be removed. in some cases you involuntarily cut some of the picture you want rendered, this is where the polygonlasso tool comes in hand.

2) take the polygonal lasso tool & select your starting point at the edge of your picture you want rendered. it might be difficult to find the polygonal lasso tool, in case you have another lasso tool shown. at your regular lasso tool or magnetic lasso tool, right click and select the polygonal. now basically cut next to the edges untill u have made it around the image and push ctrl+c and then you can paste it into a new canvas (ctrl-v)
