Leave the grey checker board background and go to File -> Save Image for Webdevices -> Select GIF -> Save and it should have a transparent BG wherever you left the checkered texture

What EXONiC said was for Photoshop.
For Gimp, all you do is save the file as .PNG

Use the magic wand tool in gimp to select the white background then click delete, then it should appear as the checker board bg as mentioned above, sace it as a .png or .gif file extension and it should be transparent :]

Try selecting it then using the eraser tool to erase it all away as best you can

thats what i do.. it consumes a majority of my time and i hardly do a good job considering all the little twists in a lot of unrenderiz'd renders

When you make a new document, there's an advance options button, click that and click transparent, or transparency, whichever one.
When you do this, it should have a gray/darker gray checker board looking background if you did it right.
When you're finished making whatever you make, save it as a .PNG and check ever box(except the top one, it does nothing and makes the file size a lot bigger).
And you're done.

Or!
You could make a new document.
Right click on that layer.
Click "Add Alpha Channel"
Then click Edit>Clear
And it will give you a completely transparent background(a checkerboard looking background)

Hope that helps.
