My suggestion is that you follow some basic tutorials.
Also try posting this up here if you are looking for opinions/feedback.

those ,,funky lil things'' you mean are brushes

you can find many of them if you just google 'brushes' - they're good to fill pics up etc^^
for animation and usage of brushes
