im sooo confused when i read in some of the tuts when it says to add a gradient map because when i do it it changes the whole sigs color way off and on the tut it barley changes. what am i doing wrong and what layer do i need to be doing this to???

Show the tutorial please.
And it is supposed to change totaly, but then you have to change the blending mode
and adjust the opacity.

gradient maps will in general be applied to the whole image and you can change it through blending mode and opacity as stated by Ivan, but you can also apply gradient maps to just one layer as well and i guess could barely change.

i finally figured it out. befor i was doing it under tools as apose to now i do it under the layers

Change the blending mode on the layer. Test Softlight and play with the Opacity.
