help? I dont want my image to be square, nor do I want it round. I just want the edges round.

i think there is a select tool with rounded edges when you have made your selection press ctrl+alt+i or ctrl+shift+alt+i
after that delete the selection

You could custom carve the round edges into the square.

select your square background

Ctrl + left click layer to highlight

goto select > modify > smooth

choose something like 10pxls

then ctrl+alt+ i

delete excess material.
