what does this mean? it wont let me upload pictures to photobucket for some reason with endings with .xcf whats that stand for?

It's a gimp project file that stores your work in layers. Just like .psd in photoshop.

You need to save it in an image file, then upload it.

Save as...and put the file name along with the file extension (.jpg or .gif or .png)
