How do you use the pen tool to render lines?

I know how to make the paths with the pen tool, and to fill the path. After that, im stabbing in the dark.

make the path with the pen tool
right click anywhere >> make selection
ctrl + c
ctrl + v
your render will be on a seperate layer by itself
