im trying to do this tutorial with a different picture. How do you smudge it without actually smudging the figure? I want to smudge it the way he does, I have 3 layers.

Smudging it involves smudging the render.
Just duplicate the render and put the duplicate under the original and smudge the duplicate.
That way the original stays intact

first, u have to copy layer of the render. turn off 1 of them. and smudge away. usually make like 6 total copies. go to the sticky and look up smudge tut. it will show it step by step.

i think i know the problem now. u unclick one of the render. the one ur not gonna smudge

if u got cs3 cs4 go to smudge tool on the left side "the one w/ the pointing finger." once u click that, open up your brushes. on top of the window, not the bar on the left. you will c a page like look and open that, that should open up brushes. so u could pick what to use.

i know i've been doing that

i duplicated my original render
put it underneath the layer
unclicked the orig. layer and smudged the duplicate layer, check the other one and it just goes back to normal.
I just did the exact same thing basically with a ripply behind it and it worked, the smudge isn't.

select the eraser tool and up at the top there should be a toolbar with a little box labeled "opacity" with a "100%" inside. Change the "100%" to something more like "10%" or whatever you want.
