Oh, to answer your question on rendering... I personally use Maya5.

Depends on what you mean by "helps". It's not the easiest thing to use but it's certainly easier than Bryce. All depends on how much you know going into it I guess.

photoshop rendering works well, no need for other programs thats just being lazy. pen tool is a more complicated way of rendering but it works. i usualy just use the magnifing glass and hex selection tool then layer via copy pretty simple.
