make sure you are saving a render (if it's cut out and has transparency) instead of copy and pasting it, because the render will keep a black background if you c&p it

so how do i take off the black stuff w/o copy/pasting it?

i meant like saving the render from w/e website (right click -> save picture as) and then opening it in gimp and moving it to that canvas, but i guess the magic wand would help you select all the black in this one, as it doesn't seem like there's too much black on the edges (if there were, you would cut off a chunk of the actual render = bad)

so saving the render to my computer magically takes off the black stuff?

it should, if the image was transparent to begin with. this is saving it off of the actual website where you see that it's transparent, not resaving the black version to your computer.
