How exactly does the gradient tool work?

I set the settings to what I want but when I try and create it by clicking on my tag and moving it outward, the gradient usually ends up uneven. How do I make it so my radial gradient starts from the center and goes outward?

If you clicked radial it should take your gradient ___colors__ and rotate that 360 degrees.

I'm still unsure what you mean, but if you want it even like each color changing is parallel instead of slightly curved, click on the button left of radial.
If you want a circle gradient, try a smaller line.
