The tutorial isn't too bad.
You could just as effectively use "CTRL + Z" or +CTRL + ALT + Z" to take a step back rather than using the history tool, just seems like it wastes less time.
I also like the idea of your brushing technique, but I find that more time consuming than cutting out what you have now, and then simply using the pen tool again to cut parts of the background.
For harder images that need to be rendered, I find a +1 feather is a good addition to the lot.

thanks. there's no set way to render; it's all preference. i made this tutorial based on my preferences and habbits.
and is this easy to follow? when i first started i read like 5 different tutorials before i understood remotely what rendering even was -.-
edit: that was the part i was confused on too actually lol~

I think everything makes sense until you get to the brushing. That just confuses me when I read it.

Or you could just use a layer mask.

Nice tutorial except I'm very confused about how the curving works exactly.

as for the curves problem, when you make a curve, these handle-bars should appear on that point you just made. you have to hold alt and click on one of the handle bar's points ( your curve should look like ._______._____. basically, but curved, you have to click on one of the 2 outerpoints) and move that handle bar so that it points to your next point. you can alter the length of the handlebar and direction, which all affect the outcome
i explained this REALLY badly, but its something i learned on my on, not from tuts~
