But i'd like to know the MOST basic tut to photoshop.... I just got it and have no clue how it works. Im looking for a tut for idiots

How come nothing shows up when i select a square from a big render and slide it into another 300x100 file?

okay, how can i select a portion of a picture and then make it smaller?

either use the pen tool to cut it out, or the area selection tool
hit ctrl + c
hit ctrl + v
hit ctrl + t, then WHILE HOLDING SHIFT, drag one of the corner dots toward the center
