I recently began taking a computer graphics class in school because i've always had an interest in it. In the class we use Photoshop and Adobe but at home i just downloaded Gimp. I was wondering how i would go about making a sig or anything like that mainly because im not entirely sure how to use the program.

Basically, i'm asking if anyone in here has any suggestions or starter projects that i should attempt in order to become more familiar with this program so that i can get better in time and hopefully start creating a sig or two.

Also open to any suggestions of other free programs that you might feel are better to use. Mainly stuck to the freebe's right now but hope to purchase the real deal in the future.
