Well I have downloaded 5 gifs and saved, and wanted to open in Gimp but when opened they are no longer animations.. once saved they aren't even animated..

It's a typical problem. I think there's no way to open it while it's not .xcf (gimp image format) no more. The same is with the images. When you got your .xcf image and save it to .png or .jpg the all layers will merge, and you wouldn't edit each layer after open them as the .jpg or .png

So... I need CS2 or CS3?
