When I go to

Filter>distort>displace and click "ok" a window pops up to my folders on my computer and it says "Choose a displacement map."

How do I set it up to just do a regular displacement?

You need to select an old .PSD file for the displace to occur from that screen. Use an old signature or create your own PSD and use it as a displacement.

that would work imo.

i also have a question about displacement.

when i do Filter>distort>displace and click "ok" i click on the pds file to use

but when i do, the picture becomes seriously displaced and the render i am

using is messed up, as in it is sent farther bottom right hand corner

i need some help with this i am so lost on how to fix it

if you want the render to look the same way as it looked before the displacement, I'd suggest erasing the parts on the displacement layer where the render originally was, so the other effects remain but the render is visible again. There might be other ways to do that, but thats how I do it.
Hope that helps

i find that c4d's work well for displacement. try copying and pasting one onto your sig, then move it around a bit till you find some flow. now hit ctrl + a so the selection you made of the c4d is the same size at the sig itself. copy and paste this to a new canvas, then save as a psd. now when you go to displace it should give your desired effect
