I have a bmp image of something with a white background and I need to know how to set the white background as "transparent". I used to be able to do this but I forgot how, ms paint doesn't do this.
Also, is there a way to set "white" backgrounds in a jpeg as transparant? I'm assuming there isn't, because if I remember correctly, the white pixels have to all be the same identical color and jpeg doesn't do that.

k thx and how do I do that? Any chance I can keep it as a bmp?
Or even better would be to be to have a transparent background on a .gif

there are several ways to render the image
The best result is with the pen tool and patience but the quickest way is with the "magic wand" tool
You can use the eraser or ever the bg eraser or the magic eraser
you can save it in .png or .gif in order to keep the transparence but .bmp does not support it.
Basically with either the magic wand or eraser (talking PS here) selected just left click on the bg (hit delete for the wand)
you have to have duplicated the bg first (alt + j or ctrl + j cant remember now)
then you have to deselect the bg. Do the deleting or erasing from this top layer
