Never let the font touch the side of the signature/graphic (leave some buffer room).
Use font that is relative to the feel... if its a bloody sig use a font with sharp edges, if its a girly one use script font.
Make sure the font is readable, don't do so much to it that you can't read it.
Use different fonts and sizes to develop a sense of hierarchy between names, guild names, ranks and so forth.

I actually recommend just using something like arial/vernanda/walkway or something else simple and elegant for nearly every signature. Rarely does a signature (imo) look good with all those graffiti fonts and calligraphy fonts. Just keep it simple. Try NOT to just stick text near the edge of the signature. Try to incorperate it into the signature itself and make it follow the flow.
