Disclaimer: Not trolling, just forgot my old user here, been a long time..(had a 2007ish acc) so had to make a new one..

I'm in the middle of my twenties and I've been wanting to pursue boxing for a long time, (I kind of grew up with itt so I always had some training every now and then but never had fights or anything like that)

however a close one to me has been a boxing coach for many years and keeps telling me that I shouldn'tt do it because I would be in a heavy weight class. I'm around 85kgs.
His argument is that even though I could be a decent boxer at this weight the sport is too brutal because the power behind the boxers at this kg. And no matter how good you are you will get hit.

However every time I've been in a boxing gym the coaches has immediately wanted me to start as they all see talent, so they say..
And they havent talked about my weight being a problem.
So now my wonder is...is the person close to me too concerned since he knows me and maybe has some kind of irrational idea about the weight because they want to protectect me or
are the different coaches I met through the years just BS me because they want boxers and dont care about you because there is no personal relation between you and them..

In the end my question to you, is light heavy weight (I think that would be me if I cut some weight to 81kg) really that much more serious?
I do understand the heavy the more power, but is it really that more crazy at this weight than the sport itself, if the make sense? kind of hard to express what I mean, hope you understand..

Regards

At this point in your life you gotta ask what’s the point?

You won’t ever be a pro and to just get hit in the head and possible get concussions, etc it’s not really worth it.

In my opinion, just stick to sparring. If I was in your shoes I’d just be aiming to be able to hold my own in a fight and have fun. Can’t imagine being punched in the mouth by 200lb guys repeatedly for nothing being fun.

yea this is prerty much what my closest said.

The question about whats point is that im currently pro in another sport. Nothing crazy, its just pays my rent thats it... However it takes all my time... and right now due to different things I wouldn't mind stopping with this to get a few more hours in my week, but I know I will need to replace my competetion drive with something else..
Which is why I thought amateur boxing would be an option, I know I would need to gets fights to get my competition eager fufilled and not just pratice....otherwise I would just start running or somehing

Edit: appreciate the answer.. its giving me something to reflect on for sure.

I mean you could always give it a try? If it’s one of those itches better try and fail instead of not trying and then regretting it for years. You being a pro in another sport is telling so maybe you might have a chance.

Idk how long it takes but maybe do it like half a year and see how it pans out. If you get a fight and do well then keep doing but if you get ko’d or are really not enjoying just give it up and you won’t have regrets about not even trying. Kind of a win win.

You could also do a few amateur fights just to see how you would do vs another trained boxer in a competetive fight with the extra padding from amateur bouts
