Two that come to mind are Jon Jones and Mike Tyson. Both were extremely dominant in their sports and openly discuss their addictions.

Question: Do you think the drugs made them excel in these sports? Or did it hinder the greatness they could have achieved?

who are some other top fighters who admit to addiction

More like drug abuse with fame and fortune..

Both Jones and Tyson weren't ready for either imo

as in steroids? the same way fentanyl is a one-off of heroin, you can have a Chinese chemist edit molecular structures of existing, banned steroids and now you have yourself a personal, undetectable steroid.

Addiction or not, Nick Diaz’s abuse of Marijuana cost him a lot in MMA.

Josh Barnett seems to have some (addictive) issues with steroid abuse, he’s failed countless tests for different PED’s.

I definitely agree with Nick Diaz as well. I was speaking more of recreational drug use like cocaine etc. The steroid issues are awkward in MMA sports as wins get vacated after the match and damage has been done I believe

I'd say cocaine provides a state, just as alcohol in lower amounts where you still can keep your focus, that can make you have more drive in your actions. The high of cocaine sure can uplift you from only the memory of it and be part of the toolkit to shift your state.

Alcohol may dull some irrelevant stuff out by only making you focus on whats infront if you. Even blackout drunk can have benefits, in the process of diciplining your mind. Erasing stuff that is not relevant, out of your interest for someone very specifically goal oriented.

Weed used in jujutsi a lot, can enable states that are a bit more... zoned in with a creative sort of kick on how to approach and get out if a situation etc. Maybe makes it more fun which can become a rewarding drive to train more. But can just aswell have a lazy consequence cause damn that cake and those chips & soda was good all of a sudden.

Psilicybin microdosing is probably common too to sharpen your focus and give a nudge to get more things done in the day.

Higher doses may disolve your old sense of self for a while, and be a tool to recreate yourself as a higher version of you etc even if nothing if the sort is expected for taking it just for fun.

Didnt tyson have a thing for the dmt like stuff coming from toads(?), i forget if it's dimethyltryptamine or a close relative. However all these things and more can act in a beneficial way to become a better fighter if used as a tool like that.

But any of these things and deep introspection can also make you lose complete interest in fighting and training at all.

And none of it necessary - holloway for instance said he didnt even ever try anything, but probably have a few nights out with alcohol. Could just be an image thing too of course. But i dont think so.

Just going downhill skiing (masvidal said he skiid on shrooms tho, on the jre show) anyway, just skiing can give the rush and hightened state that will benefit training and skill. Or going to a track to race cars etc to give that type of beneficial rush, focused flowstate & fun.

I dont know where i was going with this exactly, just saying of course drugs can make people excel in sports or anything, for some it is probably even one of the main motivational drives to become succesful & rich - so they can afford all the drugs they want.

For others sports become the antidote and cure for old addictions, so they train all the time to have their focus on something that benefits them and keeps them clear, sharp and sober.

Edit:
If it sounds like i know anything of anything btw, i dont.. just some thoughts popping up on the subject.

that was during the whole GSP retirement nonsense then took him years to come back and he had stupid injuries i think he messed up his knee in training camp, then did something with his eye. I remember he was away from the sport for a few years.

I think he also fought in a different weight class when he returned didn't he?
