okay yes, when talking about one giant pot shared by thousands, that makes perfect sense ( fair for the underdog, not fair for the favored, gotcha ). now as far as private one on one bets, the classic xx vs xx same amount, would make more sense. im guessing you guys dont do private bets, but instead bigger pots?
ah you're right there is a difference
lets say you and your bud have seen the exact same tyson vs girl fight 99'999 times. every single time it was a 10 sec KO win for mike. now you and your buddy stand in the arena to watch the same fight for the 100'000 time
what is the incentive to bet on the girl? would you really bet your 10$ vs his 10$ afte seeing the result of the last 99'999 fights? why would you do that? you wouldn't
so instead you would argue with your bud over who can pick tyson to bet on because neither of you want to burn 10$ for no reason at all. so in the end you both just don't bet at all because neither of you wants to bet on the girl.
that would be the same for everyone else. no bets would be made because there's no incentive to bet on the underdog.
so in order to make ppl bet on the fighter that is (by statsitics and judged by past performances) more likely to lose, they put odds on a fight
