why would you just accept having no ground?
Because I've never needed one. As I get older, I get into less and less fights. Now that I'm in my 20's I don't think I've been in a fight in about 4 years or so. Every fight starts standing up, and most people I've fought don't have a grappling background, especially between 95'-05', no one even knew what jiu jitsu was; I took boxing classes for a while, a long with other forms of martial arts(karate type classes), so I always had the advantage standing for the most part(except when I picked fights with kids that were way bigger than me).
Whenever I got in a fight from the age of 6-19, and I've been in a handful, no one ever tried to take me down. Not a single time. When you're in a street fight, you have a street fighting mentality; people expect for you to stand and bang it out. If someone would've taken me down in any of the fights I was in, or vice versa, 3 people would've jumped in and been like "NAH GET OUT OF HERE WITH THAT BULLSHIT".
I'm not gonna be delusional and be like "dohh I'd knock him out in 10 seconds". Yeah, it could happen, but realistically if I were to actually fight someone in a cage with no rules, I'd get dominated by anyone with any grappling experience. I've never rolled with anyone in my life, so like I said, I don't even want to find out how bad my submission defense is lol.
