I had always thought belt rank actually meant something at bjj gyms. Turns out it doesn't.

Belt colors.
I had always been under the impression people with higher ranking color belt would be better, know some better techniques, actually be able to beat me.

I haven't experienced much of this myself, I'm still a bjj noob. I've tapped a few blue belts and a couple purple belts but never more than once or twice, I still notice there is a massive skill disparity between them and me. Just tapping them doesn't speak volumes about their skill to me.

What belt / rank do you hold yourself? I can't remember if I already asked you.

I Haven't done it in about 6 months, when I was going I was white belt for about 9 months. I never ranked up cuz I couldn't afford to buy a diff color belt, yellow if I remember correctly.

That's pretty odd. Do you have a wrestling background or anything?

Where were you training that you were able to beat up higher belts?

Yes thats the thing, I have been around wrestling my whole entire life. A place in a small town near Cleveland ohio, ofc not everyone was the ideal black belt (being a bit older/ Female), but those that were was what surprised me. I love grappling and im not trying to diss them, it was awesome. They brought in this pro fighter who had trained there, and i got to work with him 3 days a week for 2 months before his fight. I love sparring sessions.
