aldo got wobbled by mendes a few times, whereas mendes couldn't even hit conor besides in scrambles / on the ground where he wasn't going to do enough damage to actually stop the fight

Gate and ppv buys has nothing to do with how great a fighter is. Look at mighty mouse, arguably another GOAT yet no one wants to watch him.
Aldo is 7-0 in the ufc defending the title in all of those fights against the TOP every time, not sub 5 ranks. THE TOP. And before that he was dominating WEC which was the best promotion for featherweight at that time, so he has been fighting and beating the top competition for way longer than mcgregor.

And in no way am I saying what mcgregor is bringing isn't good for the ufc, but most of what he does is not what's going to make him a great fighter. Outside of the octagon has nothing to do with being great.
