My advice is never go for submissions. Go for positions.
You never *go* for a submission, you take the submission given to you by the opponent. IE You full mount them and put heavy pressure on them, they push against your chest with their arms due to the pressure, and there's your arm bar. If they don't push against you, don't try to force an arm bar because it's not gonna happen. If they dont resist your pressure, then there's your opportunity to go for an ezekiel. If they try to hip escape, there's your north/south kimura. If they try to trap your leg and oompa, there's your arm under their head, lay heavy opposite of them, and swim under their arm for the arm triangle. etc ad nauseum
If you can focus on holding good positions - side control, knee on belly, especially the back and mount, and really maintain them, then submissions will come easy. If you can't hold the position, you'll never get the submission. Especially as a white belt too, just focus on holding positions (or escaping them).
7 year purple belt here, I've competed and trained a lot in other countries like brasil and europe too
