Bjj is not only a sport. It is a martial art and it does have real world applications. Takedown leading up to knee on belly then transition to full mount. Then what the guy going to do unless trained for that situation? From full mount, you have many options such as armbar, arm triangle, ground and pound. And if you on the ground, then you sweep the guy, then have superior position. Bjj has to be adjusted for the street. You can't be an idiot, get closed guard, and let someone posture up and pummel your face. You have to clinch the guy, then sweep his ass or if you can, go for an armbar.

99% of what ppl train is the sport variant tho
many militaries train the few useful things JJ has to offer
In any case, it's useless vs an armed attacker, your best option is always to disengage
even vs someone unarmed who is willing to fight dirty it's just not very effective at ending the fight before your opponent can do real damage
