He was Cassius Clay until he was like 25... so I probably would have called him Cassius Clay....
Now, I wasnt trying to insult his race or what black people have gone through throughout history in this country, but the Nation of Islam was not persecuted in anywhere near the same way blacks in general were.
His parents were not NoI and neither was he, until he had the money to further their agenda. So to say he switched his name because his previous name is a slavers name is a fucking joke. What did the Nation turn him into?
But to your first point, I would honestly hope by the time they were free they would take a name befitting of them and what they want their family to become. Not take the name of an entire nations holy leader and claim its the name he should have been born with.
His ancestors were very likely Muslims before being made slaves, most Africans were. They were not allowed to practice their religion and therefore it was lost over generations so OFCOURSE his parents weren't Muslims. That seems like persecution to me...
Muhammad is the most common name in the world, I think. If he was born a black muslim in Africa that's actually the most likely name he would have been given at birth, heh
When a Muslim names their son Muhammad it's the same as when a Catholic Mexican names their son Jesus or Miguel(which is based on Adam's name as an angel, Michael) or when a jew names their son Ethan or Abraham or Alexander. It's a sign of respect to their religion, it has nothing to do with, you know, my friend Alexander wasn't supposed to be the next Alexander the Great just because that's where his name came from... None of the Mexicans who name their kids Jesus think that their kid is going to be the next Jesus.
What did the nation of islam turn him into? Muhammad Ali is a very respectable man, he negotiated for the release of 15 American prisoners in Iraq during the gulf war, he's well-spoken, independently intelligent, successful, was the most famous man of his time and possibly still the most famous sportsman of all time, he gave up his career in his prime and went broke protesting a war that made no sense, etc. Muhammad Ali spoke up in a time when black people were expected to be quiet and humble.
I don't think the nation of Islam turned Ali into anything, but if it did than it wasn't all bad. What do you think it turned him into?
