How many fighters fight to the age of 40? And the ones that do, rarely look good.
Most stop after 37-38 tops. By that time, you're past your prime.

Askren wanted a title win, Maia doesn't, with that considered.
Askrens 35, if you assume he would have to get 3 consecutive wins, (assuming that went well).
By that time, he would likely be 37.

Plus the guy is pretty competitive, he handles losses with his chin up, but I don't know how many fights he does before he just decides to do other things. He said it before this fight that in an interview if he lost there was a very real chance he'd be done.

why do you believe maia doesn't want a title shot? he's stated in multiple interviews he's interested in fighting for the title if he can get there again

Maia doesn’t take damage for the most part, which essentially could extend a fighters prime.

The beating Askren took against Lawler alone is enough to take years off a career, just ask Rory.

And that’s without mentioning the brutal 5 second’r Street Jesus handed him.

I still think he has some left in the tank though, but he needs to start with a fight outside the top 20 to build off of.
