Has it lived up to the hype? Is it a viable alternate to WoW? Just curious, I'm interested in playing (never played WoW) and getting some friends who played WoW into it. I have a guest pass and the game seems fun, although I'm not used to the mechanics just yet. Thanks in advance!

The game overall is great.
The leveling process is a pain in the ass unless you're going out of your way to enjoy it.
With a group of people it is a little better and more enjoyable because you tend to have funny conversations / funny and memorable shit happens from people doing stupid stuff.
I suggest if you guys play it, you all play together, otherwise, someone is likely to complain a ton and bring everyone else down with them.

the leveling process is just not what modern day mmo players are used to, theres a lot of grind to it. Most modern day mmo players are very off put by this. It might would help if the quests were crazy enticing or something, but they're just quests.

has optimization gotten better?

I got a winter beta key some time ago and tried it for a weekend and I was getting the same performance at 720p low as I was 1440p high, and my gpu would heat up much more than any other more demanding titles I have.

It ruins the experience if I am chugging along.

tbh i think its actually gotten worse
they implemented a patch before the end of beta that kind of shit on a lot of users
