Compared to similarly priced Intel products, AMD products(CPU's at least) are much better. This is almost always true for lower-end/middle-end cpu's, though for the high-end stuff, Intel has the edge just because the Sandy Bridge is nice. AMD's Bulldozer is supposed to be better than Intel's SB, however.

I'm a fan of ASUS personally. I picked up one from Newegg about a year ago for 1600 or so. i7 920 CPU, 8 Gigs ram, one of GTX mobile video cards (460 maybe? I can't remember off the top of my head), 17" screen, etc.

All of these actually would probably leave you at regular price which is like 1300 and maybe 1400-1500 for Microsoft etcetc.

AND I think they have student discounts, I am not entirely sure.
