Having never owned a Halo before, you probably won't have any expectations of Reach and will probably enjoy it. Reach has the most options for the casual gamer (i.e. playlists, firefight, campaign) of all the halo series. Most of my complaints about Reach (mainly the spawn system) won't really be an issue if you're just playing casually; I actually like the bloom aspect and it shouldn't take you long to get used to it.
All in all, Bungie made Reach for casual gamers like you, and did a pretty good job of it. In doing so, they screwed over people who like to play seriously (like most of the Halo subforum) so it gets bad ratings around here. I'd recommend it, as it should be fun for you and won't be going away any time soon.
The DMR's bloom is actually the biggest concern about the core gameplay I have(This is disregarding the incredibly slow pace of the game). It's easy to do well with the bloom, and I'm good at the game etc., but it leaves WAY too much of it up to chance. People that can't aim for shit and just spam are rewarded, while people that are very good at aiming and actually wait for the bloom to reset are given the shaft. Of course, like you said, someone that has never played Halo won't give a shit about stuff like that.
/e And Reach is already dying o.O As soon as MLG switches to the CE remake, Reach will be almost as dead as H3 is.
